Prescription Management

The lifecycle of prescriptions is defined by a series of states. In HL7 terms, a prescription is a type of "Act" (think of it as the "act" of writing a prescription). The current state of a prescription, therefore, is defined by its ActStatus.

Creation (Activation)

A prescription can be created in one of two ways. Either:

  1. a system sends a Prescription Activate message to the DIS. The DIS creates the prescription and assigns it the Active status.
  2. a system sends a Record Dispense message to the DIS. The DIS will create what's called an "inferred" prescription and assign it the Active status.
